Brahms Ballade op 10 no 4
Просмотров 4979 месяцев назад
Brahms was 22 when he wrote this, 1854. Clara Schumann was no doubt suitably impressed. Many very fine pianists play this but in my book Michelangeli owns it.This is an hommage dear sir. Sorry about the ads, they are not mine. I recommend Brave browser

El Albaicín the seventh piece of the Iberia suite, dedicated to Marguerite Hasselmans who happened to be Fauré's mistress. and a very fine pianist. Note the cantabile section interspersed with "céleste" at 1:17 Heavens above...

Isaac Albeniz 1860 - 1909 Evocación de la suite "Iberia" first piece of 12 Interestingly both Debussy and Messiaen were fascinated by the colors he discovered. written in seven flats, so put that in your pipe and smoke it. Ray Alston contact@pianopracticaleditions.com did us an enormous favor by clarifying the score, thanks Ray! the dynamic range covers ppppp to fff, smoke that one too while yo...
Bartok Elegie no 2
Просмотров 2,2 тыс.3 года назад
Elegie No 2 dates from 1909, about the time as the 14 Bagatelles and For Children; curious that it seems to live in another world, Liszt and Debussy, perhaps rescued from sketches too good to be lost. Worth noting the first 5 notes are developed and transformed with Bartok's typical discipline. The curious notation left and right "pingpong paddles" indicate that that the repeating figures may b...
Messiaen Amen de la Consommation
Просмотров 1,5 тыс.3 года назад
Number 7 (VII) in Visions de l'Amen. One of the problems in performance is when you start big where do you go from there? Messiaen intricately keeps it building until the final page where he boldly goes where no piano has gone before. He does catch his breath along the way (2:23 4:21 5:47 6:01 6:42). Note the balancing in dynamics. The premiere took place on May 10, 1943, in Paris, audience adm...
Bax Piano Sonata 2
Просмотров 9533 года назад
Sir Arnold Edward Trevor Bax KCVO (8 November 1883 - 3 October 1953). We love Bax, particularly the early symphonic poems and the Oliver Twist score. There is a quality to his output which has inspired a devoted following;.epic grandeur, the world of legend, nature and faerie. The second piano sonata, the most popular and successful, dates from his early signature period. It moves in like storm...
Séverac Sous les Lauriers roses
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.3 года назад
Marie Joseph Alexandre Déodat de Séverac, Baron de Séverac; born 20-JUL-1872, died 24-MAR-1921. Debussy described Severac’s compositional style saying, “sa musique sent bon, et l’on y respire à plein coeur” Sous les Lauriers roses, one of his last works published 1919. Dedicated to his friends Chabrier (1841 - 1894), Albéniz (1860 - 1909), and Charles Bordes (1863 - 1909). The profusion of wond...
Scriabin Sonata 6 Op 62
Просмотров 2,8 тыс.3 года назад
darkness darkness. Scriabin never performed this piece, felt it was unclean, malevolent, monstrous. One curious detail is the high D off the top of the piano keyboard (11:53) which thru the magic of dsp we hear in this realization. In the violin world this is called nosebleed territory. The transition at 8:56 is pure piano sorcery; at times there are 6 streams running simultaneously.
Ravel Une Barque sur l’océan
Просмотров 2,5 тыс.3 года назад
Maurice Ravel in 1905 was living in Paris, was 30 at the time, sported a beard, and belonged to a social group of artists and writers. One time the gang was out and someone called them “Apaches”. The name stuck and they would greet each other by whistling the first theme from Borodin’s Symphony 2. There was more to the “Apaches” than Ravel and his friends, it was actually a subculture of street...
Scriabin Sonata 9 Opus 68
Просмотров 8893 года назад
Music from the dark side, Sonata 9 known as the "Black Mass". Scriabin performed it frequently and was said to look away from the piano during the final march; said he saw visions of "walking nightmares" and was "practicing sorcery". Many thanks to Zibuokle for her expert suggestions.
Scriabin Vers la Flamme

Happy 2021 everyone, guilty pleasure here. Played this song many times in the original, dished up (sic) for string four-some (sic), from 1907. The 2 piano version from 1947 starts out as a toe tapper and goes into some unexpected places. Thank you Percy. Learning VSL, more to come.

One thing that’s always amazed me about Debussy is how modern he sounds. His compositions and harmony never sound archaic or rehashed. I love how he’s all about mood and texture. His use of all different kinds of modes and scales is just brilliant. Such a distinct style and a true original. He can do something extremely abstract then suddenly switch to the most gorgeous sound in an instant. It never sounds too academic either, he mixes them all perfectly. I hear all kinds of sounds in this: lydian, whole tone, east asian pentatonic. The range of emotions he’s able to convey is astounding.

The first etude is perfect for a synthetic rendition such as this. Don't think I've ever heard a human cleanly manage those 9ths at speed. Funny how a guy with such small hands even wrote it.
